Common Health Issues

Health IssueSymptoms or CausesSuggested Action
Fin rotFrayed or disintegrating fins; the base of the fins usually reddens.Improve water quality; consult your aquatic veterinarian for treatment.
IchWhite spots appear on fins and body; fish rubs against hard objects or swims awkwardly.

Quarantine fish immediately; use a commercial ich remedy for at least two weeks

There is a great deal of color diversity within the species, and it breeds readily and quickly. The Guppy is an extremely hardy fish that can adapt to a wide range of water conditions.

They are livebearers which means that the baby fish come out free swimming. This livebearing fish breeds readily in the home aquarium without special attention if well fed and cared for. Monitor the fish closely when she is close to giving live birth. Guppies will chase their fry and may eat them if given a chance.

Guppies are compatible with most small fish. The exception to this is the Betta fish, which will either suffer fin nipping by the guppy or mistake guppies for another Betta and attack, therefore these two species should stay separated.

They will eat most fish foods including flakes, frozen, freeze dried and live foods such as brine shrimp.
